Race Report: Bimbler’s Bash 10k-ish Trail Race 2017

bimbler's bash

Spring is here, and it’s time to get my ass MOVING again.  On Sunday April 2 I joined some friends (and husband, who SWEARS he isn’t a runner… he lies) and hopped into the Bimbler’s Bash “10k” (its a little over 7 miles) trail race down in Guilford, CT.

This was the 11th year of the bash, but my first time running it!  Not sure how I’ve managed to miss it all of these years, but I’m glad I finally got out there.

What a FUN race.  The course starts out with a loop around a field behind an elementary school. Speedy runners, take note:  get out in front here, or you’ll be stuck going into the single track.  If you are out there for fun and don’t care, know that you will be in a bit of a conga-line in the trails until the field spreads out a bit.

The trails were rocky, technical, and MUDDY  from some recent heavy rains.  There are a few sections of rock scramble climbing, some steep downhills, and some super fun rocky singletrack.  Luckily, race weather was breezy, sunny, and FINALLY spring-like.  Sadly, I didn’t run with a camera this time so I don’t have any course photos but rest assured – there were more rocks, roots, mud bogs, ankle-deep puddles and water crossings than I can count, and I ran right through the middle of them all (and landed on my ass in one giant plop of mud – soft landing at least!).

I had the pleasure of meeting a couple of Shenipsit Striders running club-mates in person, as well as making some new friends out on the trails.  I had a great time, got some miles in, and finished upright.  Mission accomplished!

The race was well organized and the perfect combination of low-key local trail race with good support.  There is one water station around halfway through, at the top of a rock scramble, and plenty of drinks and snacks at the end.  I highly recommend adding this race to your spring calendar!!!  I know I will be back.
